You can use things like Dropbox to backup your files and stuff. But if you need more storage than regular free Dropbox account’s give you, you have to spend $9.99 per month to purchase Dropbox premium 100GB account. But that price is not justifiable if you are a sysadmin . What if you can get more than Dropbox type storage for the same price?
VPS’s ( Virtual Private Server ) are so cheap these days. And some of the providers give us plenty of storage for just a few bucks a month. If you go for VPS other than just a Dropbox premium, possibilities are endless. You can run your own type of Dropbox on it ( OwnCloud ). Ill cover about setting up OwnCloud on the next article or so. And you can even setup TorrentFlux and run remote desktop on the same VPS so you can download stuff to your storage using web browser etc. Continue reading →

Ever heard about Ksplice? Its a great addon to install Linux kernel updates and patches without rebooting the system. Ksplice is a gem for people who run servers because they can install critical updates without rebooting the host. Well if you are used to run latest kernels from the sources, thanks to recent security issues and rapid updates of linux kernel you will need lot of reboots if not for a thing like ksplice. Unfortunately ksplice is purchased by oracle and now it isn’t free anymore.
However Ksplice is still free for use on Ubuntu desktop. Well you might ask why a desktop user might want to go re-bootless on a desktop or laptop. Well just because we can Or you might find many other uses such as file servers or maybe even web servers running on Ubuntu desktop version.

I have published article about my modified nginx auto installer about little over a year ago. Which can be found here. Which got somewhat famous and counted over 1000 installs. The framework which I was used was came from a chinese developer called licess and the framework now has been evolved a lot and now we can count it as fully fledged auto installer. It now includes latest nginx version ( Which lacked at the time which I modified the script to include the latest and greatest) . And also now it includes separately tweaked installers for debian, centos, and ubuntu, which I had on my modified installer since day one So its nice to see that he baked 2 options which my modified installer had since day one.
Linode which is my favorite VPS host, recently announced their service availability on Tokyo,Japan data center. If your visitors reside in Asia you might be interested in jumping to Tokyo data center. But what about speeds? London data center is already performing very well for Asian linode customers.
So to find out what kind of speeds that I can get with Tokyo Data Center, I have snatched a 512MB linode on Tokyo DC and decided to perform some network speedtests. All tests were done with 100MB test files.
Unfortunately the results are extremely poor as you can see below. I wont put the blames quickly on linodes part because since its new there can be few minor problems and most likely be able to resolve this by simple support ticket. But I found something interesting,
