Linode is my favorite go to provider for virtual private servers. I have been using Linode in production for more than 2 years and I have yet to face any trouble such as down times etc. You can find the reviews I done here and here . I know linode is expensive but their service is purely unmatched by its rivals. Linode has perfected the VPS industry. Their control panel is simply awesome and its still wondering how they pull of things like Ram,HDD bumps every year or so by only requiring a simple reboot of the VPS that you are using. They have 6 data centers around the world and they have hardware uniformity on all data centers.
Last week Linode announced a series of upgrades to its service by giving us 10X bandwidth upgrade. You can see the official announcement here. They have completely overhauled their network architecture by using redundant Cisco Nexus series routers. And they have done that without even clients knowing it. No downtime or packet loss during the upgrade. I know they can pull this kind of stunts thanks to their servers having dual NIC’s but still its amazing how they upgraded thousands of hosts on 6 data centers without even causing a blip.
SSL is the industry standard to prevent eavesdropping on the internet. SSL is becoming mainstream because of increasing number of attacks on the interwebs. However SSL certificates comes at a cost, I know most of you wont go that extra step of securing your site with SSL because of this cost.
What if you can convert the $999 Nvidia GTX 690 in to a $3000 Tesla K10 ? or $1750 Quadro K5000? Yes you can. hacker community is blown up today thanks to a Australian hacker who found out a very easy way to do that. Engineering and manufacturing any kind of processor is really expensive and hardware vendors like to keep the costs down by making one model and then striping down the abilities of it and making different versions by using the same model. It turns out that this logic also applies to Nvidia.
You can convert the GTX 690 to work as Quadro K5000 or Tesla K10 by simply modding a resister on the cards main board.
Evernote is my favorite note taking application which I use everyday to keep in track of my work and even these blog posts. Whenever I get an idea I jot down it on my Evernote app on my Android, Mac or Evernote web page on my Ubuntu PC. If you are frequent reader of this blog you might know that I work on Ubuntu on my main PC and there isn’t an Evernote official app for Ubuntu. But there is “Everpad” which is a nice solution and it just works. It syncs your notes from evernote and its secure and simple. In this guide I will explain how you can install Everpad on Ubuntu and add Evernote to it.
Are you working on Arduino on your Ubuntu environment? If you are using it for the first time you might get face a problem that, Ubuntu doesn’t detect your Arduino board and you cant select the serial port by going to Tools -> serial Port because serial port is grayed out.
Fixing this is easy. This happens because Ubuntu doesn’t give root permissions to the Arduino IDE by default so it cant access the serial connections.
Ever heard about Ksplice? Its a great addon to install Linux kernel updates and patches without rebooting the system. Ksplice is a gem for people who run servers because they can install critical updates without rebooting the host. Well if you are used to run latest kernels from the sources, thanks to recent security issues and rapid updates of linux kernel you will need lot of reboots if not for a thing like ksplice. Unfortunately ksplice is purchased by oracle and now it isn’t free anymore.
However Ksplice is still free for use on Ubuntu desktop. Well you might ask why a desktop user might want to go re-bootless on a desktop or laptop. Well just because we can Or you might find many other uses such as file servers or maybe even web servers running on Ubuntu desktop version.
EA launched Simcity last Tuesday and its been a mess until now. See the screenshot above, everyone is complaining that they cant play the game due to server problems on EA’s side. Days have passed and biggest game company on the world still cant figure out a way to fix the problems. 24 hours is acceptable, 48 hours? Okay! But now 5 days have passed and still there is no fix. As a result of that Amazon now stopped selling the game and started refunding the refugees.
SimCity requires the players to be online all the time as a DRM ( Digital Rights Management ) solution, because then they can iron out the game pirates from using cracked versions of SimCity. While this sounds good for EA it can be really annoying for the players because of many reasons
Skype is great I use it everyday, and there is Skype premium which is greater but comes at a cost. If you have relatives, friends or some special one that you wanna talk to, on those Skype premium supported countries, there wont be anything that will beat Skype’s pricing for landline and mobile calls. Skype premium is not only about free calls, it also enables group video calls and group screen sharing features.
